You’ve been learning French for some time, and now you have decided to visit France and put your language skills into practice. So now it’s time to learn these essential communication hacks!
When in France, it would be a shame if you don’t speak French. Also, the local population appreciates your efforts to say something in their native language. Therefore, don’t worry if you make mistakes, as long as you’re doing your best.
Greet people in French. Simple words like “Bonjour,” “Bonsoir,” and “Salut” are easy to use when you meet French people. Also, don’t forget to wish a nice day, “Bonne journée!,” or a good evening, “Bonne soirée!”
Please, slow it down. Native speakers tend to speak very fast, and for you, as a foreigner, it might be challenging to follow the conversation. So don’t hesitate to ask them to speak slower: “Pouvez-vous parler plus lentement, s’il vous plaît?” Also, if you didn’t understand what they are saying, ask them to repeat: “Pouvez-vous répéter, s’il vous plaît? Je n’ai pas compris.”
Politeness works! The French language has a specific vocabulary related to “formules de politesse.” Simple to use, yet effective, these phrases allow you to show respect and sound polite. Don’t forget to say “Merci!”, “S’il vous plaît,” “Excusez-moi,” or “Pardon.” The French etiquette requires using these terms if you want to fit into their culture.
Visiting a French-speaking country helps you better understand their lifestyle, as well as language structure. So, while there, try to focus on French and put your native language aside. Immerse yourself and improve your speaking skills in real-life situations!
Bon voyage!
